Essay by the art historian D.W. Dörrbecker, written in July 2000 for Raymond Lohr’s open-studio exhibition in Helmsange. It places Ray L’s work in the tradition of classical modernism, from Brancusi’s search for the ideal form to Max Bill and François Stahly, and reads the sculptures Écoute I and II, Androgynes Fragment and Idée as a dialogue between polished and rough-hewn stone, abstraction and narrative.
